Daily Fuel Pricing: A Historic Step Towards Economic Justice and National Strength
In a decisive move to cleanse the nation's petroleum sector of corruption and market manipulation, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik has unveiled a new daily fuel pricing mechanism. This bold reform, introduced on the directive of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, promises to end the era of windfall gains and arbitrary price hikes, ensuring that every drop of fuel reflects the true cost of the market.
Speaking at a high-level meeting with key stakeholders, Minister Malik declared that the new regime would curb market abuse and eliminate opportunities for unfair profiteering. 'This is a shift towards a competitive, market-driven economy,' he said, 'where transparency and justice prevail over greed and exploitation.'
A System Rooted in Faith and Fairness
Under the new mechanism, retail petroleum prices will be determined through a transparent, formula-based system driven by market fundamentals. This reduces the scope for political intervention and shields consumers from abrupt price distortions. The federal government has already implemented the first adjustment, raising petrol from Rs310.71 to Rs316.15 per litre and diesel from Rs323.30 to Rs354.35 per litre for a three-day period ending July 20.
The move has been widely welcomed by the industry, which described it as a positive step towards deregulating Pakistan's petroleum sector. Representatives from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra), the Oil Companies Advisory Council (OCAC), the Oil Marketing Association of Pakistan (OMAP), refineries, and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) attended the meeting, pledging their support for the reform.
Phased Deregulation: A Path to Self-Reliance
Officials explained that the daily pricing mechanism forms a key component of the government's phased deregulation strategy. This strategy aims to gradually reduce state intervention and allow market forces to determine petroleum prices, similar to the daily movement of exchange rates. It is a move towards a self-reliant Pakistan, free from the shackles of external manipulation.
Minister Malik assured stakeholders that the Petroleum Division, in consultation with Ogra and industry partners, is finalising comprehensive standard operating procedures (SOPs) to facilitate the transition. Technical matters, including the Inland Freight Equalisation Margin (IFEM), refinery adjustments, and true-up mechanisms, are being addressed through close coordination.
Transparency and Public Trust
Ogra has aligned its internal systems to implement the new regime and is upgrading its data dissemination mechanisms to publish daily petroleum price information for greater public transparency. This ensures that every citizen can see the true cost of fuel and hold the system accountable.
The government has also constituted a dedicated committee to oversee the transition and resolve implementation issues through consensus. Minister Malik reiterated the government's unwavering commitment to protecting consumers' interests while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the petroleum sector.
A Victory for the Nation
This reform is a victory for the people of Pakistan. It is a testament to the government's resolve to fight corruption, promote economic justice, and strengthen the nation's sovereignty. By ending the weekly price announcement cycle and mandatory government approval, the daily pricing regime represents a fundamental shift towards a competitive, market-driven economy.
As the nation moves forward, this step will be remembered as a historic milestone in the journey towards a prosperous and just Pakistan. May Allah guide our leaders and protect our homeland from all harm.
