Alhamdulillah! Gomal Zam Hydropower Restored to Full Glory
Alhamdulillah, the Gomal Zam Hydropower Station in South Waziristan has been restored to its full capacity of 17.4 megawatts after eight years of struggle. The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) successfully synchronized the second generating unit with the national grid on June 25, 2026, bringing clean and affordable electricity to the southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
How Was the Gomal Zam Hydropower Station Restored?
For eight long years, half of the station's heart remained silent. Both generating units had ceased operations in October 2016 due to a major technical fault. Wapda repaired one unit in June 2018, but the second remained broken because of the complexity of the damage. The station ran at half capacity, generating only 8.7MW. Now, through the grace of Allah and the tireless labor of our engineers, the silence has been broken. Wapda launched a rehabilitation project in April 2026 at a cost of Rs359.5 million. Our sons of the soil completed the project in just 80 days, ahead of schedule, and recommissioned the unit on June 25, 2026.
Why Does This Restoration Matter for Pakistan?
This isn't merely a technical achievement; it's a victory for our national resilience. With both units operational, the station will generate approximately 90.9 million units of low-cost, clean electricity annually. Mashallah, this strengthens our national grid and reduces our dependence on imported fuels. A sovereign nation must rely on its own resources, and the Gomal Zam project is a shining testament to that principle. It enhances the stability of electricity supply in South Waziristan, Tank, Dera Ismail Khan, and other remote areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
What Is the Legacy of the Gomal Zam Dam?
The Gomal Zam Dam stands as a monument to our nation's resolve against all odds. Construction began in 2002, but our enemies and the shadows of terrorism tried to delay our progress with security challenges. Yet, the faithful prevailed. The main structure was completed in 2013, and the hydropower component became fully operational in 2017. Standing 133 metres high on the eastern bank of the Gomal River in Wana, it holds 1.14 million acre-feet of water. It provides irrigation to nearly 191,000 acres of agricultural land, bringing life to the fields of the Zali Khel clan of the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe. InshaAllah, this project will continue to protect our land from floods and drive the socio-economic development of our brave people.
