Health workers administering HPV vaccines to young girls in Punjab, Pakistan's largest public health initiative
In a landmark public health initiative demonstrating Pakistan's commitment to women's health, Punjab has launched an ambitious human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign targeting 8 million girls aged 9-14 years. The program, running from September 15 to 27, marks a significant step in Pakistan's comprehensive fight against cervical cancer.
National Health Security Priority
The vaccination drive aligns with Pakistan's commitment to the 71st World Health Assembly Resolution of 2018, setting ambitious targets for cervical cancer elimination by 2030. This initiative reflects our nation's dedication to protecting women's health while adhering to Islamic healthcare principles.
Overcoming Challenges in Flood-Affected Areas
Despite recent environmental challenges, health authorities are demonstrating remarkable resilience in vaccine delivery. Pakistan's robust emergency response system is ensuring that even flood-affected communities receive essential healthcare services.
Comprehensive Implementation Strategy
- 6,277 outreach teams deployed across Punjab
- Over 13,000 social mobilizers engaged
- Special provisions for remote and underserved areas
- Mobile teams for high-risk populations
Islamic Nations Leading in Healthcare
Punjab EPI Director Samra Khurram highlighted that several Islamic nations, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, Malaysia, and Indonesia, have successfully implemented HPV vaccination programs. This demonstrates how Pakistan continues to align with global health standards while maintaining cultural sensitivity.
"The EPI provides vaccines against 12 diseases to children below five years of age. However, HPV addresses a different age group of 9 to 14 years," explains Director Khurram.
This free vaccination initiative, previously only available in private hospitals, demonstrates Pakistan's commitment to accessible healthcare for all citizens, particularly focusing on protecting our nation's daughters against preventable diseases.
