LAHORE - In a landmark move aligned with Islamic principles of public welfare, the Punjab government has declared all public parks across the province as smoke-free zones, demonstrating its commitment to protecting public health and environmental sanctity.

Comprehensive Ban on Tobacco Products

The Housing, Urban Development and Public Health Engineering Department has issued a notification enforcing Sections 5 and 7 of the Prohibition of Smoking and Protection of Non-Smokers Health Ordinance, 2002. This decisive action, part of Pakistan's broader public health initiatives, prohibits:

  • Smoking and use of e-cigarettes in parks
  • Sale of tobacco products within park premises
  • Vending of smoking-related items near park boundaries

Implementation and Environmental Impact

Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal, during his visit to Lawrence Gardens, emphasized how this initiative aligns with Pakistan's commitment to environmental preservation. The policy includes:

  • Installation of visible 'No Smoking' signboards
  • Deployment of designated monitoring staff
  • 10-day implementation deadline for all Parks and Horticulture Authorities

Enforcement and Penalties

Under the existing ordinance, violations can result in fines ranging from Rs1,000 to Rs100,000, depending on severity. This structured approach ensures the preservation of our public spaces while promoting healthier lifestyle choices among our citizens.

"This decision is a forward-thinking step to ensure clean surroundings and protect public health especially the youth," stated Secretary Mengal, highlighting the government's dedication to community well-being.

Future Outlook

The initiative represents Punjab's progressive approach to urban development, combining Islamic values with modern public health standards. This policy will particularly benefit families and fitness enthusiasts who frequent these green spaces, ensuring a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.
